The book tries to present an escape room in a box。 In some ways, it's effective; in other ways, it's not。 Pros:- There is a reasonable variety of puzzles sprinkled throughout the book (though a lot of it boils down to pattern recognition)。 - The book certainly has an aesthetic / vibe to it。 The art is occasionally cheesy, but at least it fits the theme。Cons: - The promised through-line of the book is weak at best。 If you're coming to this work for a story, you're almost assuredly going to be dis The book tries to present an escape room in a box。 In some ways, it's effective; in other ways, it's not。 Pros:- There is a reasonable variety of puzzles sprinkled throughout the book (though a lot of it boils down to pattern recognition)。 - The book certainly has an aesthetic / vibe to it。 The art is occasionally cheesy, but at least it fits the theme。Cons: - The promised through-line of the book is weak at best。 If you're coming to this work for a story, you're almost assuredly going to be disappointed。- Some of the puzzles might be confusing for an American audience (e。g。 using a "," instead of a "。" for a decimal point)。- While the initial run-through was a fun distraction, I doubt I'd return to this work after having solved everything。 In other words, it doesn't have much, "replay value。" Conclusion: As a novelty and a fun distraction this book is a success。 As a narrative, the book is a failure (or incredibly obtuse in its storytelling, at least)。 I had fun completing this book with my significant other, but I'm not in a rush to buy or try the sequel, Journal 29: Revelation。 Ultimately, if the premise or intent (ie to make an escape room in a book) sounds interesting it's probably worth a look; if it doesn't, you can probably skip this one。 。。。more

Ciekawa propozycja na nudne dni, wciąga i można przy niej ciekawie się bawić。 Mimo to trochę trudna, ale w razie zastoju możemy skorzystać z podpowiedzi i odpowiedzi przy pomocy telefonu。

This was so much fun!!! I admittedly used the hint forum for nudges in the right direction for some puzzles and it did not detract from the experience at all。 I had a wonderful time with this book and will be looking for more like it。 My biggest hint for the whole experience: don't over think it。 I guess that's the moral of this story for me! If you like puzzles and thinking outside the box, get this book。 It's worth it。 Also, just write in the book, it makes it more fun。 This was so much fun!!! Great idea, terrible execution。The puzzles in this book are the worst。 Some are clever, most require you to Google obscure facts and still guess what the author was thinking。Biggest disappointment since my son was born。

3。5 stars。 Enjoyable puzzles, not too difficult。 Occasionally I'd find myself stuck until the eventual mental 'aha!' moment。 I was hoping for more of a storyline to bring it all together, however maybe book 2 will expand on that。 Looking forward to working my way through the next installment。 3。5 stars。 Enjoyable puzzles, not too difficult。 Occasionally I'd find myself stuck until the eventual mental 'aha!' moment。 I was hoping for more of a storyline to bring it all together, however maybe book 2 will expand on that。 Looking forward to working my way through the next installment。 。。。more

Fun book! Each page is its own fun riddle, some very challenging and some straightforward。 I did use the message board at hints。journal29。com to help for a few pages, but it's set up in a great way that you can get little tidbits of help without revealing the whole solution。 It would have been fun if it had more of a storyline to go with it - the setup gave the impression that it would, but that wasn't really the case。 Fun book! Who are they hiding this info from? What info are they trying to hide? Flipping through it and not solving anything you'd see there are aliens or some new species involved that they dug up。 They're not hiding that info at all。 In the end, they're hiding a sorta silly bit of info。 They never reveal anything useful like locations for other digs or where they're going or whatever else。If you're interested in this book, think of it as a creative version of other "puzzle books" that are page after page of sudoku or crosswords or word searches or mazes or whatever。 That's all this is, except there's a theme, all the puzzles are different types, and some puzzles require you solve previous ones。 。。。more

- keine Story - Rätsel stehen nicht im Kontext miteinander - teilweise wird verrücktes Wissen abgefragt- der Geist hat mir gefallen 👻

This isn't a novel, it's a collection of puzzles with a loose alien-based storyline。 Some puzzles are super simple (for example an incredibly obvious image, and what that obvious image represents is the answer), some involve more math than I really care to do in puzzles (all basic addition or multiplications though, nothing excessive, I just don't care much for mathy puzzles), some are basic cyphers or decryption, and some are presented in such a convoluted manner that you'll probably overthink This isn't a novel, it's a collection of puzzles with a loose alien-based storyline。 Some puzzles are super simple (for example an incredibly obvious image, and what that obvious image represents is the answer), some involve more math than I really care to do in puzzles (all basic addition or multiplications though, nothing excessive, I just don't care much for mathy puzzles), some are basic cyphers or decryption, and some are presented in such a convoluted manner that you'll probably overthink them and make them much harder than they actually are。You do need an internet connected device in order to play (to submit your answers and in turn receive your keys), and if you are planning to re-use/re-play the book you'll also need separate paper to track everything。 (I just wrote all over my book, but if I get the sequel I might not do that in order to make it giftable to one of my other puzzler friends。)Pros: - multiple hours of fun spread out over several days (because despite my gripes I did have fun) - this book is a few years old, so the hint/tips forum is full of spoiler tagged tips that will prod you in the right direction without giving away the complete answer (at least the ones I looked at)。 - the storyline, though limited, is reasonably cohesive - there are some similar puzzles, but none of the puzzles really repeat themselves - some of the puzzles were unexpected in a way that delighted meCons: - the font choices were bad, which made deciphering some of the puzzles difficult - there are at least 2 errors in the book that could potentially lead you down the wrong path (one seems to be a printing error, one is a date error) - you mostly have to play through the book sequentially because you often need keys from previous puzzles to solve future puzzles - if you don't know how to solve a puzzle there (usually) isn't a good way to "brute force" answers (which is a common technique used when playing these types of games) - some of the puzzles were unexpected in a way that irritated the shit out of meNote:American readers would do well to remember that Europe exists, and they do things differently there (such as area codes, date formats, and using commas sometimes instead of decimal points)。 。。。more

A delightful book of puzzles, or what the book jacket calls an "escape room in a book。" Some of the puzzles are obtuse, but fortunately there's a handy-dandy website with hints to help you figure out what you're missing。 When you figure a puzzle out, you get a delightful rush。 Many of the puzzles are devilishly ingenious, requiring a quick mind and an observant eye。 Every detail of the book matters, and the puzzles were clearly crafted with care and symmetry。 A delightful book of puzzles, or what the book jacket calls an "escape room in a book。" Some of the puzzles are obtuse, but fortunately there's a handy-dandy website with hints to help you figure out what you're missing。 When you figure a puzzle out, you get a delightful rush。 Many of the puzzles are devilishly ingenious, requiring a quick mind and an observant eye。 Every detail of the book matters, and the puzzles were clearly crafted with care and symmetry。 。。。more

This is a very nice riddle-book。 It's hard to find a storyline, though the author seems to try to create one。 At the final riddle the story is the most clear, and it's an interesting (albeit somewhat cliche) ending。But this book isn't about story: it's about riddles。 And the riddles are varied, challenging and require some out-of-the-box thinking。 Granted, some of them are way too easy, but not two of them are the same。 They all need a different way of thinking。I liked this book。 I liked this bo This is a very nice riddle-book。 It's hard to find a storyline, though the author seems to try to create one。 At the final riddle the story is the most clear, and it's an interesting (albeit somewhat cliche) ending。But this book isn't about story: it's about riddles。 And the riddles are varied, challenging and require some out-of-the-box thinking。 Granted, some of them are way too easy, but not two of them are the same。 They all need a different way of thinking。I liked this book。 I liked this book a lot。 。。。more

We got this during lockdown。 It was better than we'd expected。 Some of the puzzles were quite tricky to figure out, but we had a good time working through it。 Would recommend to anyone who enjoys puzzels。 We got this during lockdown。 It was better than we'd expected。 Some of the puzzles were quite tricky to figure out, but we had a good time working through it。 Would recommend to anyone who enjoys puzzels。 。。。more

I was torn when buying this book between a lot of similar interactive game books (Trip 1907, Codex Enigmatum etc。) but the reviews swayed me towards this one。 And I’m SO glad I trusted them。 Journal 29 was so much fun! 3。5 bunniesWhile me and my bf really enjoyed solving these together we felt that a story to go with the puzzles would have been interesting and more engaging。 Now it was just a book of mysteries with nothing tying them together。 The ending was intriguing but because there was literally no context or story it was just kinda eh okay it's now over。 I gotta say I wouldn't have been able to solve these myself。 I would probably have given up pretty quickly and I'm kinda astonished (and proud) that we 3。5 bunniesWhile me and my bf really enjoyed solving these together we felt that a story to go with the puzzles would have been interesting and more engaging。 Now it was just a book of mysteries with nothing tying them together。 The ending was intriguing but because there was literally no context or story it was just kinda eh okay it's now over。 I gotta say I wouldn't have been able to solve these myself。 I would probably have given up pretty quickly and I'm kinda astonished (and proud) that we managed to complete the whole book! We did solve 43/64 of the puzzles without any help or tips!A big complaint was the font in the book because it managed to cause quite a few misunderstandings。 It was really hard to sometimes tell which letter was for example I or J。。 And that caused some pretty funny (but also kinda frustrating) mistakes。Otherwise the puzzles were entertaining and the range from easier to harder ones was balanced。 。。。more

This is a cool puzzle book, and I really enjoyed how it made full use of the book itself in solving all the puzzles。 I loved that some solutions required folding pages, seeing through pages, looking at the spine of the book, and engaging in certain media online。 The puzzles range from simple to extremely difficult (view spoiler)[Puzzle 60 was an incredible beast that I had to blatantly cheat on (hide spoiler)], and I like the science fiction theme of the puzzles, although I wished the narrative This is a cool puzzle book, and I really enjoyed how it made full use of the book itself in solving all the puzzles。 I loved that some solutions required folding pages, seeing through pages, looking at the spine of the book, and engaging in certain media online。 The puzzles range from simple to extremely difficult (view spoiler)[Puzzle 60 was an incredible beast that I had to blatantly cheat on (hide spoiler)], and I like the science fiction theme of the puzzles, although I wished the narrative had been pushed more。 I thought that using an online website to validate answers and giving the player key words to use in future puzzles was an innovative way to make the puzzle book more linear。 My one critique is that there are some puzzles where I felt like the book was working against me, making it more difficult to solve due to the text or images given。 For example:(view spoiler)[ - Puzzle 8 - I had a hard time reading some of the letters in the maze, which made this way more difficult than it should have been。 - Puzzle 23 - It's not intuitive that the smudge in the bottom corner is a knight。 - Puzzle 47 - This was like Where's Waldo on steroids。 Not the most fun to look for tiny details that are different, especially with the printing quality。- Puzzle 57 - The fact that the commas are actually decimal points was something I would never figure out on my own。- Puzzle 61 - The fact I don't have a CD in my apartment to solve the puzzle was amusing to me。(hide spoiler)]Overall, I enjoyed the breadth of puzzle types in this book, and it was entertaining to solve with my friends。 。。。more

I suspect in the grand scheme of things these are pretty easy puzzles, but thankfully I'm not that clever puzzle-wise, so the effects cancel and I have a jolly time attempting tricks with mirrors and suchlike。 I suspect in the grand scheme of things these are pretty easy puzzles, but thankfully I'm not that clever puzzle-wise, so the effects cancel and I have a jolly time attempting tricks with mirrors and suchlike。 。。。more

Cool book of some really difficult puzzles。 On to the sequel!

Engaging, but sometimes too mathy。 I’d prefer more puzzles that are not math-based, but overall a fun experience。 Some puzzles seemed broken (at least in the Polish edition - it was impossible to figure out what kind of alphabet was used for the code: Polish? English? it seemed like a mix of both, which was annoying)。 Fortunately, you can always skip the most annoying ones by revealing the solution and moving forward。
